Parkdale is the chosen spot for the DK Photo Group to open their new contemporary urban photography gallery, galleryDK. The thriving community of cafes, boutiques, galleries and shops speaks to all aspects of urban life and is the perfect location.

On April 10, galleryDK will open its doors for the first time and host the STEPs to University students of Parkdale Collegiate Institute and West Toronto Collegiate Institute as they present their work in visual sociology. With sociological concepts in mind, these talented students have taken images of their world, with emphasis on the issues of stratification and inequality. “Mosaic” is a colourful interpretation of our society.

The STEPs to University program is organized and run through the University of Toronto’s Transitional Year Program and is generously sponsored by HSBC Bank of Canada. The program is running in ten high schools across the GTA with the cooperation and support of the Toronto District School Board. The program’s mandate is to help students realize that attending institutions of higher education is an attainable goal.

Proceeds from the sale of the pieces will be split between the student artists and a donation to the local food bank.

Please join us for the opening reception of this unique perspective of society on April 10 from 4 – 8pm. galleryDK is located at 1332 Queen Street West (at Elm Grove) on the north side. For more information please visit our website at www.gallerydk.com.

This preview exhibition is generously sponsored by The University of Toronto, HSBC Canada, The Toronto District School Board, galleryDK, Century 21 Regal Realty and Heartland Art and Framing.

Only 3 more days between now and opening! I can’t believe we are 99% done and will be opening our doors to the public this Thursday. It has been a lot of work, an incredible amount to be exact. I think we will all agree that we will never do something like this again. The funny thing about not knowing what you are doing, not only does it take forever, but you have no idea how long it will take. But damn, does it ever look good!

Have a look at the front now (courtesy of Sean and Flickr) - here

And have a look at what we started with and the almost finished product.

So come on out April 10th and see for yourself!

So far the response to the call for submissions has been outstanding - we have received work from all manner of artist. We do need to remind people, though, that we are a photo-based gallery and as such are looking for only that type of work. We need more, we want to see what everyone out there has to offer. We know it is hard to submit to a gallery that is not even open yet, but trust us, it’s coming soon!
