Relinquished aims to illustrate the folly of demolition by neglect. The photographers of the DK Photo Group (DKPG) aim for their images to change human behaviour and to instill an appreciation for what has come before. Without the information the photographs provide, viewers will not even know what they are missing. DKPG strives to provide a better understanding of abandoned buildings in order tocreate a sense of wonder about history.

April 1st to 25th | Opening Reception on Thursday April 1st from 7pm to 10pm

galleryDK is proud to present Jane Fulton Alt’s “Mourning Light” exhibition of mixed media pieces (photography and encaustics on wood).

Man is forever confronted with a range of choices between good and evil. In exploring our potential to view our fellow man as “other,” I felt compelled to understand our collective “shadow” side. This is what propelled me to visit the Slave Forts of Africa and the Nazi Concentration Camps, places of extraordinary darkness…

Jane Fulton Alt - Mourning Light

Immersed in the black spaces of the holding cells, the transport cars, and the gas chamber, I was desperate to find any light, visible through a doorway, a ceiling, a crack in the wall … an attempt to counter the darkness that had enveloped me. These photographs speak to the light in the face of that darkness, and are an effort to memorialize all who have suffered thru out time.

Please note that galleryDK is closed April 2-4 for the Easter long weekend.

About the exhibition:
This exhibit explores the surfaces of mature tree barks, rusting metal and old walls of brick and stone. Textural commonalities create ambiguities for the viewer and may make the original surface unidentifiable.

The surfaces become sites for inscriptions, formal and informal and sometimes multi-layered. These human interventions in the aging materials record a moment in time and place, and reflect a personal story unknown to us. In turn, these markings and sites will succumb to the ravages of time.

The exhibition runs from September 3 through September 26. An opening reception will be held the night of September 3. Please note, however, that the gallery is closed September 5 and 6 for the Labour Day weekend.

galleryDK is proud to present a new photographic exhibition by Vancouver artist Karen Moe. The exhibition runs from July 2 to July 26. An artist reception will be held on July 2 from 7-10pm.

–
Lethe / detritus

Named after the river that is drunk from to instill forgetfulness before one descends into Hell, Lethe addresses how what we forget creates who we are and thus forms cultural identity.

This exhibit and performance at gallery DK combines two of Vancouver artist Karen Moe’s photographic series “detritus: East Vancouver Alleyways” (2004) and “Lethe: a mock metaphysics” (2005). In ‘detritus,’ Moe documented found objects in alleyways as symbols of what is discarded in society and as traces of memory located in personal histories. The self-portraits and performance of “Lethe: a mock metaphysics” are a response to Moe’s own abduction and rapes; the art production and reception extends this personal distress into its societal context. By exhibiting these projects together, social and personal liminalizations echo each other in tangible ways.

As a visual context to the Lethe images, Moe will create a background series of images composed of newspaper photographs of some of Vancouver’s missing women along with their names and the dates of their disappearances. These women were literally vanishing as she created Lethe, a fact unknown to her and the majority of the Vancouver community at the time. But Lethe, being about memory and forgetting, can now become a memorial on many levels.

In this anguished elaboration of discarded things and disappeared women, Moe’s exhibit articulates silences at the core of patriarchal culture and the social and spiritual necessity of memory’s continuance.

————————————————–

Found Worlds*
A Photographic Exhibition by Jerry Riley

Art is often made by aleatory processes, the by-product of other intentions, of colours and shapes meeting in unforeseen ways. Photography is the art of drawing our attention to these unexpected moments and their results. When I look at the images in the Found Worlds series, I see the objects I photographed, with their imperfections and irregularities, and I also see old maps, environmental changes, views of the desert, lights across the bay, red flowers in a distant field, and dancing villagers. What do you see?

I see the Found Worlds images as landscapes, continuing my love of landscapes as photographic subjects. Ordinary man-made things often seem to have other lives, unexplored inner vistas. My previous photography looks at the inadvertent reflections of Toronto buildings in each other’s mirrored surfaces, changing as the city changes–accidental art made by large, impressive objects. My exploration in Found Worlds looks at the extraordinary creations that occur as unassuming by-products of the artistic process-accidental art made by small, humble objects.

My friend Elva Hook is a fine art painter. Paints that were chosen for large mural projects invariably resulted in left over materials when the project finished. These remnants of colour were used to create new, exciting and provocative works. A second life. As the paint flowed over the canvas in Elva’s skilled hands, the excess dripped off the edges and collected in trays placed to protect the floor, where it dried, forming a skin. These “skins” became my subjects. A third life, a new universe. At the photographic moment, each of these skins is unique and unrepeatable, each a new encounter with ourselves. The process of refining the image and taking it to print completes the step, giving it audience, yet another life.

For me, Found Worlds is also about new ways of thinking about our natural and built environment, finding value in objects we forget, overlook or discard in our consumerist society. I see the creation of a new visual ecology as part of our obligation to preserve and protect the environment, thinking differently in a sustainable aesthetic. This sensibility is not only about reducing waste in our resources, it is also about deepening our appreciation of the world around us, looking farther and with new surprise at nearby ordinary things. Revisioning what we already know leads to the discovery of new territories. I hope you find your own worlds in these images.

Jerry Riley

galleryDK is proud to present TRANSFIGUREMENT, the newest exhibition by the DK Photo Group. The exhibition runs from April 30 through May 31 in conjunction with the Contact Photography Festival. An opening reception will be help on May 7, from 7-10pm.

As part of change, old ideas and methods must be left behind. While revolution propels the new and innovative, it abandons the old… leaving ideas, methods and beliefs in its wake. Nothing is immune to this change – and even the firmest institutions are susceptible to transfigurement as part of their evolution. The work of the DK Photo Group explores the often-ignored consequences of revolution, reminding the viewer of the transformative stages thereof.

The DK Photo Group is an accomplished Toronto photography collective, exploring themes of urban history and architectural memory. Comprised of five photographic artists – Russell Brohier, Sean Galbraith, Steve Jacobs, Laurin Jeffrey, and Mat Merrett – the DKPG explore those spaces and places cast off by the community in hopes that their work will greater understanding of our relationship with the built form and the past lives therein.
